Future Plans
Stevenage was Britain's first new town and planned to an
inspirational and robust design. When first built, it was
attractive and successful and people were proud to shop here.
In recent years it has attracted quality new investment in
retail and leisure such as the West Gate Centre, the Forum and
the Plaza. However, there is now an opportunity for major
redevelopment to realise the wider potential of the town centre.
The new town centre scheme will offer:
A range of new shops including a major department store
Restaurants
New town centre homes including affordable homes
A new museum and library
Improved access and upgraded public spaces
New civic facilities
New bus station and town centre car parking
It will help put Stevenage back on the map as a sub-regional
centre to rival other town centres.
Councillor Sharon Taylor, leader of Stevenage Borough Council, said: "This is a
very exciting time for Stevenage as it moves into a major phase in its history
with a new town centre and other exciting regeneration projects. We have worked
hard alongside the developers and our partners the national regeneration agency
English Partnerships and we are confident people will like what they see."
The plans for this scheme went on display in the former
Edward the Confessor pub from 24-31 March 2008 and hundreds of
people stopped by to give their views. The developers have
now submitted a Planning Application, which is currently being
considered by the Planning Department at Stevenage Borough
Council. For more
